  • IF SÁNCHEZ DOES NOT FULFILL HIS PROMISES

ThePlatform for the Defense of the National and International Road Freight Transport Sectoris threatening to call another strike in July to protest working conditions for truck drivers, resuming the protests that began in March and brought logistics in Spain to a standstill.

Specifically, the president of the platform,Manuel Hernández, has requested in a letter to the Ministry of Transport, to which this newspaper has had access, that the law preventing companies from working below cost, which the government promised would be in place by June 30—a date less than a month and a half away—be passed. If the deadline is not met, transporters will stop their trucks.

"You made a commitment that on June 30, 2022, the Law Prohibiting Loss-Making Contracts in the Road Freight Transport Sector would be ready, which is our number one priority. The Minister told us that we would be kept informed of its progress and drafting, and we were strongly urged to trust her word," saysHernández.

The president of the platform criticizes that "with only a month and a half to go before the promised date and no official or direct news, costs, mainly fuel, have risen by 10% since the strike began, the operating costs of our trucks are close to €1.50, and the average prices we receive are between €0.85 and €0.95. Transport operators have taken advantage of the situation to raise transport services by between 40% and 60% for factories, and they are not passing this on to carriers. All the precariousness and abuses that we denounced continue to occur without the Transport Inspectorate preventing or intervening in any way."

In light of this situation, the Platform for the Defense of the National and International Road Freight Transport Sector has requested a meeting with the Ministry of Transport to learn firsthand about the current status of the development of the law prohibiting contracting at a loss, its penalty system, and means of effective enforcement. It also aims to denounce and detail, with clear evidence, that the measures implemented by the government are not being complied with.
