The Spanish Association of Aluminum and Surface Treatment (AEA), which represents more than 600 companies in the sector, along with other business associations in Spain, has sent a letter to European officials Kadri Simson, Commissioner for Energy, and Thierry Breton, Commissioner for the Internal Market, calling for changes in the energy market.
The letter highlights the “critical” situation facing the country’s industrial companies due to rising energy costs and volatility in recent months—a situation exacerbated by the political and economic crisis stemming from the invasion of Ukraine—and therefore denounces an “unsustainable outlook”
that jeopardizes the continuation of their industrial activities. Furthermore, the letter warns that, if the situation does not improve, many companies that have
had to temporarily close their facilities “will be forced to implement temporary layoff programs (ERTES) and possibly relocate
production.”
This would mean, in the aluminum processing sector alone, a 10% drop in production, which, in terms of jobs, would result in the automatic loss of 2,000 direct jobs held by specialized workers.
