Trade relations between the European Union and the United States deteriorated during former President Donald Trump's term in office, particularly following the imposition of tariffs of 25% on EU steel imports and 10% on aluminum imports.

The EU responded to Trump's measureswith its own round of tariffs on several US products, including bourbon whiskey, peanut butter, blueberries, and orange juice.

The two blocs had been trying for months to reach an understanding to resolve the dispute over steel and aluminum.

Contacts intensified after the EU and the United States reached an agreement last June on the battle over illegal state aid to US aircraft manufacturer Boeing and European aircraft manufacturer Airbus, the longest dispute in the World Trade Organization (WTO).

Both sides then agreed to suspend their countervailing duties, valued at up to €11.5 billion, for five years.
